I did kids tournaments for years. I never did it for the 50-100( in the
old days) bucks I was paid, but rather; for the exercise and the love of
the sport. i never intended to "bash" a club, but I was trying
to let on when a kid with ringworm is allowed to wrestle over mine or
any other official's and trainers objections, that crosses a line of
disrespect. It is all of the disrespect that the older more experienced
officials get from uninformed coaches and directors that make them
choose not to officiate.
That is my point. The rest of my entry was written from a context of
frustration and I apologize to all concerned over my comments. if you
want the good officials and they come out, you should treat them like
gold, because we talk like cackling hens to each other. The better the
word of mouth, the better refs will start coming out. |

We are paid to referee the matches but not to put up with the parents,
coaches or even the wrestlers that do not show us the respect we are
entitled too. Without us on the mats you would have the coaches running
the meets. We all joked about forming a union to represent us. You also
wonder why there is not enough ref's to go around. Take the time to show
respect and as the song goes, teach your children well. Maybe we would
have a better society. By the way it's not the money we get that makes
us come out to these tournaments its the love of the greatest and oldest
sport. |

| Should you have a problem with an
out-of-control coach this year get their card number and the team head
coach will deal with him at their next practice. If I am not mistake the
head coach that day for that event will be asked to leave the mat and/or
building. That will solve many attitudes this year, and should keep the
few refs we still have doing a great job without all the grief. |

You do not have to put up with the coaches anymore! If they do not have
the badge on they cant coach. If they do, walk them to the head table
and wright there IKWF # down, and report them. |

If I am not mistaken the refs now have the power to boot a trouble maker
.... but get this the assigned head coach at that event for your club
gets the boot instead of the trouble making coach.
Im sure it did pass at the general meeting maybe Jon Davis can
correct me if I missed heard the vote.

You talk about our temper. Lets not bother to talk about the attitudes
of the coaches. first of all how many of you attend the rules meeting or
do you send one coach from each club. If you think you can do so much
better then by all means get on the mat and give it a try. We have some
coaches who are running the show telling ref's to leave their events. I
see some IKWF officical tell another coach you should'nt pay that
offical because he has a bad attitude just because you don't get your
way. If you think youre god's greatest coaches then why are you not Head
Varisty Coaches at your local High School. Their is even a coach that
flashes a "Fire Badge at some ref's because he didnt get a good
call or claims race. When are you going to stop blamming the ref's
because of bad calls. Why don't you change places with one and see how
you would do. Iv'e been working with kids my whole life as a coach, a
teacher, father and yes as a school board member. If you dont stop and
control your own tempers like I seen two coaches almost coming to blows
we will have a case like the Hockey father fight. Is this what you want
to teach your children.

JUST THINKING...
I AGREE THAT THE REFS TAKE ALOT OF HEAT. I ALSO BELIEVE WE WIN AS MANY
CALLS AS WE LOSE. I DON'T AGREE WHEN A REF WILL NOT TREAT EACH MATCH
WITH A FRESH PERSPECTIVE AND HE ALLOWS THE DIFFICULTIES OF THE DAY
AFFECT HIS JUDGEMENT. JUST AS REFS WANT RESPECT, SO DO THE COACHES. YOU
MAY TAKE THE TOURNEMENT AS A WHOLE. BUT TO EACH COACH THIS IS ONE
INDIVIDUAL EVENT. HE HAS NOT HAD CONTACT WITH 30 OTHER COACHES AND 100
WRESTLERS AS YOU HAVE. HE IS ALSO NOT BEING PAID TO BE THERE. HE HAS PUT
MANY HOURS IN WITH THESE KIDS AND FEELS PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR
PERFORMANCE.
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SPORT YOU REF, NO ONE WILL EVER AGREE WITH
ALL THE CALLS. IN TODAYS WORLD OF HEATED EXCHANGE AS THE NORM THE REF
SHOULD BE THE CONSTANT. HE SHOULD RISE ABOVE THE MOMENT AND SET THE
EXAMPLE. THE COACH IS TOO EMOTIONALY INVOLVED, THE REF SHOULD NOT BE.
WHEN I AM AT MAT SIDE AND DON'T FOLLOW THE RULES OF ORDER, I WOULD HOPE
THE REF, INSTEAD OF GETTING UPSET WITH ME,WOULD REDIRECT ME AND TAKE
CONTROL OF THE SITUATION. MANY TIMES THE VOICE OF REASON CAN TURN A BAD
SITUATION AROUND. A CALM, DIRECT, RESPECTFUL APPROACH WILL GO ALOT
FARTHER THAN CONFRONTATION FOLLOWED BY EJECTION.I AM AS GUILTY AS ANYONE
FOR LOOSING MY TEMPER. I AM NOT TRYING TO BE HYPOCRITICAL JUST TRYING TO
FIND A COMMON GROUND.

give the refs some slack, if you would have gone to the score table to
simply ask what you kid was doing wrong you probably would have got a
simple answer. refs are hard to come by and i think they are doing a
great job where would our sport be without them? if we don't get some
new refs in the trenches our sport is in trouble. so go to the table
next time and see if the results are different. keep up the good work
guys. |
