January 18, 2002 -  Dave Gilbertson

Lots of action happening today around the Everett area today. The day started at Everett High School at 6:30am to help with the NW Novice League Championships. We took entries continuously from 7-9:00 and then we all started to draw up bout sheets. Marilyn and I had to leave at 10:15 to try and get to Marysville for the start of the Premier Tournament for high schools hosted by Marysville-Pilchuck High School. I took a couple of pictures of the crowd which you can check out at my web site. I talked to Mark Ryder tonight (EHS coach) and he told me we had 487 kids enter the tournament and they finished up at 4:00 PM.

Marysville hosted a good tournament which was well run. 18 teams competed (I think) and USA Everett kids did well for their respective schools. The first three weight group had USA Everett kids as champions. Jonny Gilbertson of Cascade took first at 103, John Hanks of Marysville was first at 112 and Justin Davidson of Bothell was the champion at 119 pounds. Will Ward of Monroe took first at 152 and Derek Lopez of O’Dea was runner-up at 160 pounds. Cascade had two other wrestlers in the finals, Jose Ayala at 125 and Rory Douglas at 145. Both finished second with tough losses in the finals. Complete brackets of the tournament are at: Bracket Link

Final note before closing was that I was called and told that Trevor Hall and Eric Starks both took 2nd at Tulsa Nationals back in Tulsa, OK today. In the semifinal Trevor was leading Gabe Burak of Colorado by a score of 4-0 but got put in a front headlock which resulted in a cradle and a pin. He came back and got 2nd on the wrestle back beating Justin Blummer.  Burak was the Cadet National Freestyle champion last year and was the Schoolboy National champion the year before. He was the wrestler that gave Jonny his one loss at Cadet National Duals last year. I sure wish Trevor had beaten him. I’m not sure if Eric lost in the semi-finals or the finals but he did get second. Congratulations to both of the boys. I don’t know if anyone else from Washington wrestled there.

The following is a list of the placers from The Reser Founders Cup December 21, 2002 tournament in Portland, Or that was hosted by the USA Cobra club.

Zachary Pohren of Mt. Vernon, age 8, first place 55 pound midget. Jordan Watts of Mt. Vernon, age 9, 2nd place 70 pound midget. JoMae Alewine of Marysville, age 10, 4th place 60 pound novice. Alysia Pohren of Mt. Vernon, age 10, 6th place 75 pound novice. Cody Pohren of Mt. Vernon, age 11, 1st place 85 pound novice. BJ Alewine of Marysville, age 12 3rd place 80 pound schoolboy. Kevin O'Neil of Sedro Woolley, age 12, first place 85 pound schoolboy.

This tournament was a first year tournament so it didn't have a lot of kids in some brackets, but several had 8 or more kids. All of our kids had at least 3 matches, with most of them having 4 or more. Mr. Reser donated the awards; first place trophies and really nice medals through 6th place. The medals came in a display case and were labeled. It will be a good Christmas holiday tournament in the future years for our kids, since the competition is so good. All Phase and Cobra clubs were there as well as most of the other tough Oregon clubs. BJ lost to a tough kid from California who took first place in his division.
