NIC wrestlers dominate region
CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- North Idaho College wrestlers won championships in eight of
the 10 weight divisions while dominating Friday's Region 18 tournament at
Clackamas Community College.
The Cardinals finished with 115 points to easily outdistance the host Cougars,
who were runner-up with 66 points.
NIC's other two wrestlers finished second. The Cardinals qualified all 10 for
the NJCAA national tournament in two weeks.
NIC's champions were: Justin Pearch (133 pounds), Chris Nedens (141), Keri
Stanley (149), Stryder Davis (157), John Zamora (165), Tyson Springer (174),
Blair Alderman (184) and Israel Silva (285).
Zamora scored a 10-5 championship win over David Courchaine of Cheney, a
two-time State 3A champion who competes for Yakima Valley CC.
‘‘It was a really competitive match and we ended up getting (Courchaine) in the
end," said NIC assistant coach Kevin Roberts. ‘‘Those are probably two guys that
will be looking to place in the national tournament."
Nedens scored a technical fall in his championship match. He also had a pin in
his semifinal.
‘‘He had an outstanding day and really controlled his opponents," Roberts said.
Davis topped Michael Fisher of Clackamas 6-2 in his final.
Stanley defeated Josh White of Southwestern Oregon CC 7-2 in the final after
giving up the first takedown.
