Glad that more than two of us thought some refs made bad calls at the
tournament, but it is done now - all over. Usually, I will not complain about
refs unless it is really warranted and it was this past weekend. Oh well!

Who do you guys think is the best and worst refs from Oklahoma? I thought for
the most part they were better than the out of state guys.

Officials? <>
Remember people, these mat officals are not paid for any kind of national
events, they volenterr thier time just like the coaches do. Do you know how much
gray area there is in Freestyle and Greco? Have you ever sat down and try to
read the rule interpretations? We do have some very good officials in this
state, Archie and Jerry Kuntz are trying very hard to bring these guys along and
give them plenty of expousure, heck instead of running them down, why don't you
become officials, remember you could work for free or sit in the stands and shut
up.

Just because somebody refs for free does not allow them the right to act as if
they are god. You see the problem that I saw with most of the refs this past
weekend was their attitude. They thought they were above the average human
being. They thought that because they were the "ref" that they could be rude and
down right mean to whom ever they wanted because they were the "ref". I saw this
time and time again. They act EXTREMELY rude to any coach or fan that bring up a
point or question. If that coach did not take his crap and rudeness he was
threatned to be removed. They would even challenge them in a way where in the
normal everyday street situation would constitute an as$whoopin. Not to mention,
some of the mistakes this weekend were unexceptable even for one volenteering
his time. They were bad and I mean real bad. Keep in mind, if I cannot do
something, I dont volenteer my time to do it especially if my knowledge of what
ever it was might effect the outcome. Especially in a sport like wrestling where
a kid works waaaayyyy to hard for a ignorant man to think he is the one up there
on stage and screw the kid out of what should be his. If you cant do it,
practice in the practice room (there are plenty of those around) and then give
it a try. If you make a mistake, admit it and try your best to work with people
rather than talking down to them like they are a piece of trash when they dont
aggree with your call. Attitude is everything and these refs this weekend had
terrible ones. And dont get back on here and say, Well, how would you like to
take all the screaming and abuse these guys take etc etc etc. I say to that,
first if you are getting so much screaming and abuse, then you probably suck.
Second these are grown men that know what they are getting into and should have
a stronger skin. They knew going (or at least we hope they do) what wrestling is
all about and that is something a ref should be able to take. OR STAY IN THE
STANDS HIMSELF!

Another referee whiner. Let me ask you this question? If you call 75 matches in
a day, and everyone has their own take on a call that they want to "comment" on
or "question", how many of these are you supposed to be able to handle before
you get irritated? If I'm going to call a match, I really don't want to take a
poll before I make a call. It really doesn't matter what the call is, if it's
close, someone's going to be upset and I'm pretty sure that these "comments" and
"suggestions" coming from coaches, parents and fans aren't the calm,
constructive type. These guys are good people who are trying to do a thankless
job. Maybe you should be the guy that tries to round up the officials for one of
these tournaments? I'm here to tell you, they aren't out there. Who in their
right mind would go out and submit themselves to the rantings of idiots who've
never even seen the rule book, much less read it. I really doubt that any one of
these officials were out to "screw" a kid. They do the best they can, some are
better than others. That's just the way it is. With the parents and coaches that
are around now, you couldn't get me to referee a match at gunpoint. I've been
involved in wrestling as a competitor and coach for over 25 years. I've ref'd
some freestyle and Greco before and I'll NEVER do it again. Not because I don't
know the rules or I I'm not very good, but because I'm not going to take crap
from some pencil neck that doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. If you
think the ref sucks and screwed you or your kid, find another reason you got
beat. It should have never been that close. If you're a parent in the stands and
want to question or critisize an official, get involved, get certified and YOU
DO IT. I'm sure the people who are trying to round up officials to bear the
brunt of your criticism and abuse would appreciate it.

I've watched vieo tape of matches that I've called while the memory was very
fresh in my mind. The video was taken from a seat in the stands where the parent
and other fans were seated. They would point out various terrible calls that I
made. Then I would rewind a little and watch it again and invariably there was
something happening that wasn't evident from that view. We would go over the
video together and I would point out what was happening that wasn't clear from
that angle and the times I've done that the parents were very understanding and
didn't feel cheated anymore, but in seeing a match from that angle had felt
TERRIBLY cheated!! (and frankly, from the video I would have felt the same lol).
The styles of the wrestlers has a LOT to do with whether you need to be very
close in or back away getting the big picture. Jeff used to crawl all over me
because I would be like a blanket on the wrestlers but I knew there "could" be
things happening away from me that I'd have to make a call on and I didn't feel
comfortable making it without seeing it happen first hand but everyone has the
style they need to use for their own needs.
Ego's can also get involved but I would bet money every ref that volunteer'd and
reffed last weekend "tried" to do the best job they could and in their mind
after the match they did! There are also certain moves and styles that some
reff's call better or worse with and if you get two wrestler's who primarily use
that style or move the ref can really struggle. There will always be instances
where a ref just flat misses a call but for the most part they will give you
your money's worth.
