Wrestling rules are confusing"
WrestlingRef pretty
much nailed it - and not unexpectedly. I figured if anyone would get this
all right it would be a current official. It underscores my point that
wrestling rules can be confusing, and many "bleacher officials" that get on
this board and complain about calls are not up to speed on all the nuances
of the rules. (I noted that there were 195 views of my original post before
Wrestlingref wrote his answer. That's 190+ people who didn't attempt to
answer the questions).
Kudo's to WrestlingRef, Wrestling Rules, Guest, and larryb who all took a
stab at it. It's harder than you think. And just imagine having to do this
on the spur of the moment.
For reference, here are the answers that I recorded when i oriinally wrote
this post...
Scenario 1
Off the whistle at the beginning of a match, wrestler A shoots on wrestler B
and attempts a “submarine” takedown. Wrestler B unsuccessfully attempts to
stop the takedown with a figure 4 on wrestler A’s head with the head and arm
both trapped in the figure 4. A is successful in securing the takedown.
What is your call?
A: Without stopping the match, award a 2 point takedown and a 1 technical
Violation point to Wrestler A. A figure four around the head in the neutral
position is a Technical Violation.
Scenario 2
Wrestler B escapes and then wrestler A shoots on wrestler B and attempts
another “submarine” takedown. Wrestler B attempts to stop the takedown with
a leg scissors on wrestler A’s head with the head and arm both trapped in
the scissors. A is successful in securing the takedown.
What is your call?
A: Stop the match and award wrestler A 1 point for the illegal hold
entered by B. The action stops with the illegal hold so no takedown points
are awarded. The wrestlers start again on their feet.
Scenario 3
Wrestler A then applies an arm bar and figure 4’s the head without an arm in
an attempt to secure the fall.
What is your call?
A: No call, wrestling should continue. A figure 4 around the head is a
legal move with or without an arm.
Scenario 4
In the second period wrestler B chooses top and, during a scramble, uses a
leg scissors around the stomach to trap wrestler A on his back.
What is your call?
A: No call, wrestling should continue. A scissors of the body, both legs,
or 1 leg are all legal moves. Award near fall points as earned.
Scenario 5
In the third period wrestler A chooses top and, during a scramble, uses a
figure 4 around the stomach to trap wrestler B on his back.
What is your call?
A: Stop the match and penalize wrestler A for an illegal hold – a figure
4 of the body or both legs is an illegal hold.
Scenario 6
Wrestler B attempts to reverse wrestler A by turning in and grabbing a
single leg. Wrestler B switches to a double leg attack and attempts to
submarine wrestler A. Wrestler A applies a figure 4 to wrestler B’s head
(without an arm) in attempt to stop the maneuver.
What is your call?
A: No call, wrestling should continue. A figure four around the head in
the neutral position is a Technical Violation. But the wrestlers were not in
the neutral position, even though this resembles the takedown in scenario 1,
it is different because wrestler A was the offensive wrestler and so did not
commit a Technical Violation.
Scenario 7
Wrestler A puts a figure 4 around wrestler B’s left leg. In the course of
the struggle, wrestler A’s leg slips from the back of his own knee down to
his calf.
What is your call?
A: No call, wrestling should continue. Neither a figure four nor a
scissors of 1 leg are illegal.
Scenario 8
Wrestler A puts a figure 4 around wrestler B’s left leg. During a struggle,
wrestler A is able to scoop up the second leg into the same figure 4 and
applies a half nelson to turn wrestler B.
What is your call?
A: Stop the match and award B 1 penalty point for wrestler A’s illegal
hold. A Figure 4 of the body or both legs is an illegal hold.
Scenario 9
Wrestler A puts a figure 4 around wrestler B’s left leg. During a struggle,
wrestler A is able to scoop up the second leg into a double leg scissors and
applies a half nelson to turn wrestler B.
What is your call?
A: No call, wrestling should continue. A scissors of either one or both
legs is a legal move. |
